Ellery Queen
During the past winter I shook off the dust of New York and went a traveling in Europe. In the course of a capricious roving about the corners of the Continent (a roving induced by that boredom which comes to every Conrad in quest of his youth)—I found myself one August day in a tiny Italian mountain village. How I got there, its location and its name do not matter; a promise is a promise, even when it is made by a stockbroker.
《Conrad in quest of his youth》(可以在Youtube上找到),是當時的一部無聲喜劇電影。
而 that boredom which comes to every 。。。
The most terrible thing about the past is that there is so much of it.
Each year as it slips by stands between us and the golden days of Youth
Which of us has not sought to travel back through time; to feel once more the keen joy, the full heart, the wonder and thrill of life as memory points it?
So from far-away India, returns a soldier, war-worn and weary; conscious of the changes time has wrought in the world and in himselfConrad Warrina
Thomas Meighan
====
I have followed the fortunes of the Queens, father and son, with more than casual interest for many years. Longer perhaps than any other of their legion friends. Which places me, or so Ellery avers, in the unfortunate position of Chorus, that quaint herald of the olden drama who craves the auditor’s sympathetic ear and receives at best his willful impatience.
古戲劇大概以chorus開始(herald of the olden drama)的,辭典上說:The chorus in Classical Greek drama was a group of actors who described and commented upon the main action of a play with song, dance, and recitation。
